Below are a series of films and television programmes that feature bisexual characters that are more than just a punchline and have their own developed storylines, not necessarily related to their sexuality.
Heartstopper (Netflix, 2022)
Nick Nelson is a character who goes through a realisation process which leads him to come out as bisexual. His coming out scene has resonated with fans and has provided a form of comfort.
From the survey that we conducted at the start of this project, we asked which characters people viewed as a 'positive' representation of bisexuality and why. Nick Nelson was the most common answer.
Sex Education (Netflix, 2021)
Adam Groff is another character who undertakes the realisation and acceptance of his sexuality. Throughout the series, he had been presented as the 'bully', which made his 'coming out' somewhat hard for people to accept.
In this scene from 2x06 (Season 2, Episode 6), Adam comes out to Eric, the guy he has been flirting with, yet also bullied in the past. Eric is an openly gay character which surprises Adam as to how he reacts.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (NBC, 2021)
Rosa Diaz is a character who starts to express her sexuality more as the seasons progress.
Stephanie Beatriz, the actor for Rosa, is openly bisexual and frequently expresses current topics within the LGBTQ+ community.
The character has a dedicated episode of her coming out. This clip from 5x10 (Season 5, Episode 10), shows Rosa coming out to her co-worker before her parents which best displays the comfort of coming out first to the most supporting people.
Killing Eve (BBC, 2021)
The character Eve Polastri (played by Sandra Oh) is a character where her sexuality is
explored throughout the series but it is never stated how she identifies. This provides an acknowledgement that multisexuality exists, which kept the audience actively engaged throughout to see her sexuality development.
This scene from 3x03 (Series 3, Episode 3) shows Eve going from her husband onto Villanelle, despite Villanelle disrupting the relationship between Eve and her husband.
